Smorgasburg 2014 Open Call for Vendors
Every January and February we hunker down at Flea HQ and focus on adding new faces and facets for the outdoor season. Opening weekend is April 5+6, 2014. One fun (and filling) aspect is reviewing applications for new food vendors, mostly for Smorgasburg.
Famous or first-timers alike apply online and then drop off or serve samples at our Dumbo office, where we also chat about what you want to do. This screening/”try-out” process is what makes the quality of the markets so high, and every vendor large or small has gone through it.
So if you’ve ever schemed about turning your food-business dream into a reality, now is the time to start the process with us. We’ll still continue to accept new folks throughout the year, but for an April start before the markets get full, drop us a line soon.
To apply for Smorgasburg, click here. To apply for the Flea, click here. You can apply for just one or all four of our weekly locations, but note that food vendors generally start out at Smorgasburg, as the Flea has far fewer food booths.
A few tips:
Research what foods and products are already available at the markets, as we rarely accept multiple vendors in the same category.
In the application “Description” section, be as specific as possible about what products you intend to sell. You won’t be required to stick to these items, but not being specific in your application reduces your chances of hearing back from us.
Making delicious food is a baseline—presentation and professionalism are just as important.
We like total newcomers just as much as established entities.
If accepted, in order to sell you’ll need a Temporary Food Service Establishment Permit and Food Protection Certificate from the NYC Health Department, insurance, and any relevant Fire Department permits.
Competition for spots is very high, and we cannot respond to every application. We wish we could, but there just isn’t enough time!
Good luck! Operators are standing by.
